Non-traditional
dwellings are generally referred to as
system built or prefabricated. To the
general public the word ’Pre-fab’ in the
context of housing conjures up a variety of
mixed views and opinions. Many consider
these buildings as ‘temporary accommodation’
constructed after the wars. However, sixty
years on they still represent a significant
proportion of our housing stock.
The aim of this document is to provide a
technical overview of the most popular types
of non-traditional dwellings. In addition,
and most importantly to provide information
on visual recognition construction and
associated defects.
